More than 200 tourists who were stranded in southern Peru’s Puno department due to protests against mining activities have managed to leave the area, according to the president of the Regional Chamber of Tourism (Caretur), Manuel Quiñones.
The tourists were able to leave the region through the airport at Juliaca, state news agency Andina reported.
“The tourists, mostly Europeans, traveled to Cusco, Lima and others to Arequipa,” Quiñones said.
Many of the tourists, taken out of Puno on the small launches to visit the Uros and Taquile and Amantaní islands, spent a night on the islands and sought other exits from Puno the following day, while others returned to the city of Puno in the evening and went ashore at different hotel piers under dark, a lakefront source told Peruvian Times.

This is a preview of what is in store if Huamla supporters gain power in government. Investors and tourists alike will flee Perú. These rioters and Humala supporters in Puno have tried to maintain the mask of a calm and reasonable demeanor, but now as the election draws near and they see their candidate’s chances of winning slipping away, the masks have come off. Throwing eggs at Keiko Fujimori was child’s play. Now they are demonstrating what they truly think of the democratic process and free will of the people. They believe that the destruction and theft of private and government property is within the bounds of civil disobedience. These are vicious ignorant people who have no respect for the lives of others. Sure… they have been infiltrated by agitators and Red Ponchos from Bolivia and Argentina, but those infiltrators represent the true unabashed mindset of the likes of Hugo Chavez, Ollanta Humala and Evo Morales. These men represent a step back into oppression, domination and dictatorial government centric power that will drive Perú into poverty and isolation. It is simply inexplicable that the two faced, pompous, self-aggrandizing, “Borracho Burro” Alejandro Toledo would throw his support to Humala, while impugning the integrity of quality people like Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK). Surmising, against any reasonable observer, that PPK is stupid, unknowledgeable and ignorant for his support of Keiko. Toledo a is truly pathetic human being. Toledo, like the rioters in Puno, sees his opportunity to be in an authoritative position slipping away. So he sells-out with a desperate grab at the coattails of Humala attempting to ride into power. Humala, a man Toledo used to despise.
I wince with disgust when I hear people say things like this, “As it has been said before Humala is not going to be another Chavez because the circumstances are totally different. Peru has a growing economy and he has the chance to be remembered as a president who will fight against corruption and terrorism, two of the worst things we have in our country right now.”
Doesn’t the mere fact that Humala would, if he could, follow the lead of Hugo Chavez send chills down your spine? Doesn’t it matter that Perú’s growing economy will evaporate and open the doors to an authoritarian government with a Humala presidency? Doesn’t is matter that poverty is the worst problem Perú has right now? Doesn’t matter that Humala himself (not his father) is a corrupt terrorist personality? Apparently not to some people.
Fortunately the events in Puno should widen the polls in favor of Keiko Fujimori. Still the destruction, pain and loss in Puno is sad and appalling.
